A Burlexe Tribute to Donna Summer

From Burlexe's Creative Director Howard Wilmot:

"I had the pleasure of interviewing Donna Summer in one of my previous incarnations as a journalist. I got the opportunity twice, once in person, once over the phone which is just greedy looking back but I lapped her up.

Obviously, the in-person experience was the best: she played the 'grand diva' knowingly with a naughty twinkle in her eye, telling off her PR in an adjacent room for being too noisy while being self deprecating and charming. They say you should never meet your icons as they're always a disappointment - which is generally true - but Donna Summer was above and beyond.

When I quizzed her about the 'sex disco' she was famous for - the reported orgasms she had in the studio for Love To Love You Baby - she told me she didn't take it seriously, she thought she was being more Lucille Ball.

She was burlesquey though I never really realised it at the time. Looking back the disco glitter should've given it away but she played characters and explored what it's like to be a woman - you only have to look at the Once Upon A Time, Bad Girls, The Wanderer and She Works Hard For The Money albums to get a sense of that.

Even without the incredible voice and the musical achievements - five time Grammy winner, a pioneering game-changing track like 'I Feel Love', the Queen of Disco tag etc but more than that she arguably paved the way for the dance scene and also Madonna, Lady Gaga, Beyonce and... Everyone else. Let's never forget that. The world is a lesser place without her."

The Wisdom of... Tina Fey

"How do you juggle it all?’ people constantly ask me, with an accusatory look in their eyes. ‘You’re screwing it all up, aren’t you?’ their eyes say. My standard answer is that I have the same struggle as any working parent but with the good fortune to be working at my dream job. Or sometimes I just hand them a juicy red apple I’ve poisoned in my working-mother witch cauldron and fly away."

30 Rock might be heading towards its final season but comedy writer and performer Tina Fey is far from quietning down. Saturday Night Live's first female head writer, Emmy award, Golden Globe, SAG award winner and all round awesome, Tina is currently filming 'Admission' with Paul Rudd.

The UK is starting to develop its female talent with Sarah Millican's solo show recieving a second season and C4 offering a platform to Inbetweeners Movie actress Jessica Knappett, Phoneshop’s Emma Fryer and Edinburgh fringe newcomer winner Roisin Conaty. Perhaps we're about to discover our own Tina Fey - its been a long time since French and Saunders hasn't it...

Royal Stamp of approval for British Fashion

In the flurry of 'British' themed tat swamping the UK, its easy to miss souvenirs that actually are quite special.

The Royal Mail, from today, are issuing a run of stamps to celebrate British Fashion from 1945 forward. Advised by The Victoria and Albert Museum; the ten first-class stamps show world-famous iconic clothing that has inspired both haute couture and high street.

Including Dame Vivienne Westwood’s famous multi-coloured tartan ‘harlequin’ dress, modelled by Naomi Campbell in 1993, the stamps show the development of male and female fashion via designers such as Sir Norman Hartnell past costumer to The Queen.

Available from all good post offices (bad post offices have no taste) for £6 per set.

Burlesque Backlash?

We couldn't help but notice the ongoing discussions and repercussions around various features about 'bad burlesque' currently doing the rounds. And obviously, we wanted to add our twopenneth-worth.

We're concerned about the level of antagonism this is causing. Yes, there is bad burlesque out there but there are also bad singer-songwriters, comedians, magicians and assorted 'talented' folk doing the rounds in any local pub, bar or club you happen to visit in the capital or beyond.

But nobody deems any of the others worth writing features about. Or maybe in other art forms there's a consensus that the live circuit is vital for artists to showcase their material and cut their teeth in a live setting. Inevitably the good, the ambitious and the downright bloody-minded make their way to the top - it's the way of the world, rightly or wrongly. Beyonce wouldn't be the world-class performer she is today had she cut her teeth from the age of 14 as part of Destiny's Child in her mum's Headliners Salon. And so it is or should be with burlesque, n'est ce pas?

So does the current debate say more about the inherent misogyny in society? Or the fact that we're all that little bit defensive because for years our psyches have been dented by the all-too-easy parallels with the sex industry. Or the fact that: surely anyone can strip, right?

No wonder we can be down on ourselves.

At Burlexe we've always believed burlesque is a precious jewel that needs to be nurtured, cherished and respected. Inevitably, we need to pull together, respect each other and our choices but also be able to know when something is worth worrying about and just as much, when it's not.

Debate is great but we're dying to get back to the bapflashing...

The wisdom of Janet Jackson

"In complete darkness we are all the same, it is only our knowledge and wisdom that separates us, don't let your eyes deceive you."

We don't need to tell you about Janet Jackson. Almost everyone grew up with at least one Jackson in the public eye, regardless of whether you were a fan or not.

Celebrating her 45th birthday today, Janet has explored self-actualization, feminist principles and politically driven ideology within her music. Sometimes, articles don't even mention the infamous Super Bowl 'Nip Slip.'

Oh.

1st Annual Perth Burlesque Festival with UK guest Billie Rae

Perth_burlesque_festival_burlexe

The burlesque festival season is certainly upon us! Preceding The Australian Burlesque Festival by a few weeks, Sugar Blue Burlesque bring performers from all over the world to the West Coast May 24th - 27th.

The organisers aim to bring world-class international, interstate and local Burlesque acts to the Perth audience. A rare experience for the world’s most isolated capital city, the festival affords show go-ers the opportunity to experience Burlesque performance in styles that vary greatly and fantastically across nations, scenes, and personalities, and to support and engage with the local Burlesque scene in the process.

Brighton burlesque beauty Billie Rae and co-producer of 'La Bordello Boheme' will be travelling down under at the end of next week. A headlining performer in both the UK and Europe, this is Billie's first trip to Australia so we caught up with her before the excitement got too much!

Looking forward to your trip?
"A working holiday is always a pleasure, but I am looking forward to seeing south of the Equator and being somewhere I have never been before. Also seeing at least a little bit of sun..."

Tell us more about the scene in Australia. How did you get involved with the festival?

"I know a little about it as when Adora Derrier - who I first met in Paris in 2009 at a show - came over to the UK with her bubbly Ozzy personality and really funny acts, I was running a night which she performed at often and got to know her from that really well.

Adora runs Sugar Blue Burlesque, where she has workshops, shows and a troupe. I also have worked with Trixi Tassels another Perth lady. She's a darn good tassel twirler! She's part of the Sugar Blue crew. I'm looking forward to meeting some of the other ladies and seeing what the Australian crowds are like."

We'll be hearing more from Billie next week and keeping you updated with her antipodean adventures!

What's next for the World Burlesque Games Team? Betty says:

"We’ll be celebrating with a very large bottle of champagne and a very long nap! We’re hoping to take most of June off to relax and concentrate on personal projects before work gears up another notch in July to prepare for our next big event in the summer: we're taking The Sexy Circus Sideshow for our first run at the Edinburgh Fringe for the entire month of August!

I’m really excited about this event as it will be a completely different experience to WBG;  the burlesque content of the new show will be extremely limited as we will be working with an electrifying host of Sideshow and Circus performers from all over the world! It will be nice to take a break from burlesque for a bit and see a different side of the cabaret and variety scene.

I’m also super excited as it will mean I get to live in my homeland for an entire month! I haven’t lived in Scotland for about 6 years so it will be lovely to spend some quality time there. We’re also planning a small preview UK tour of the show in July and are hoping to take the show to London too before the end of the year. Plans are also in the works for a show marking the 10 year anniversary of Chaz Royal as a burlesque producer in November, in which we hope to include some amazing headlining artists from around the world. It’s shaping up to be a busy year!"
